Is there any proposals to produce a Kiwicashing or NZ geocoin.

The thread on the NZ GPS site looks to have stalled. Does anyone know of the status of this or does someone need to start the ball rolling again?

Replies.

We are keen to get a "Kiwicaching" and/or relaunch the NZ geocoin, our chairperson Gen Custer is probably the best person to contact for more details and to get things moving along

Hi, yes I do have a coin planned. I know exactly what I would like and it reflects both New Zealand and Kiwicaching in what I hope is a desirable format. I don't want to say anything about the design (sorry) out of committee at this stage though. When it goes ahead, we will have a quick poll to yay / nay design and any subtle changes. Then get on with it.

The issue at the moment would be funding (for what is after all a new organisation) if the coin is a 'Kiwicaching' one. There are options to fund coins where the coin maker gives the designer some coins and sells the rest themselves. I'm not overly keen on that idea.

I'd like the coins to be collectable or tradeable to all cachers and be a source of income for the Kiwicaching Association as well. Which means fronting up with the $ first. There are plenty of web sites around that list coins for sale and forums on groundspeak as well so it is more than possible to get pre-sales sorted (where coins are reserved before manufacture).

I would also like some coins to be specific to Kiwicaching members only and this may take the form of a different finish or a numbered series. So these would have to be paid for by Kiwicaching or underwritten by individuals, quite apart from the pre-sales - which really are just an unconfirmed offer to purchase.

Any ideas from anyone as how to raise initial funds?

I can come up with some approx figures to make coins and it is easier now that only 250 are required to have a unique icon - this costs US$150. It also costs US$1.50 per coin to make it trackable. And as long as everyone is happy with a PC (Personal Coin) prefix, we don't have to order more than 250 in a production run - a unique prefix (eg: KC) requires a minimum of 1,000 coins initially and 250 hereafter. The downside of a large order is selling them and decreased 'value'. Upside is unique prefix = more collectible. A perverse converse really... Smaller production runs also means more flexibility such as the ability to produce an annual coin.

So initial costs are US$150 for Icon + US$375 for 250 trackable coins + die design + manufacturing + shipping (all unknown at this stage). I'd guestimate US$1,000 - US$1,200 depending on quality for 250 coins.

I have also been doing my research by purchasing coins from different coin makers to check the quality. At least, that is my excuse

With the right support behind us, it will not take a year or two either...

Kevin.

Hi guys I know I'm new to the "Kiwicaching" gang but I reckon having a coin is a great idea, the yanks go crazy over these things and becaause there aren't that many NZ coins around they are sure to be popular, ie I have had minted a personal coin (with assistance/backing from castle coins and pins) selling via his site just under 500 coins Also I heard a rumor that a NZ GPS society coin sold on ebay for US$30 I am more than happy to share my experiences/assistance with this project. This is the first time I have checked out this site since we signed up - Mr has spent all the time on the computer! I think a kiwi coin is a fantastic idea - we will look forward to it. Michelle (mrs Spy3)
