This event was a huge success and it was all due to the Ashburton cachers - 3 out of 4 of whom are Kiwicachers... I'd like to thank them for the weeks of organisation and liason with coin makers and coin collectors around the world. It was great to see a lot of collectors and cachers attend too. Great (from my point of view as a North Islander) to put faces to the names of the South Islanders, forge new friendships and maintain contacts. There were three North Islanders and an Australian cacher present as well as the multitudes of South Islanders. I'm sure everyone had a great time and the kids also enjoyed themselves - most of them were cachers anyway, including the youngest - at 6 weeks old - who found his first cache (called 'my first cache') at two days old... Of such things are future cachers made... (at least his parents will know where he is at 16 years when he's borrowed the car keys...) So thanks Team Chelmo, Keewee, rchdlyn & Kiwi Nomad! Cheers, GenCuster
Geocoinfest is an international event that is designed to help bring geocoin collectors together to chat and trade. The very first coinfest was held in Temecula, Califonia, with over 400 cachers attending. This spring instead of one huge event it has been decided to run a series of regional events all happening on the 6th October. This will allow a greater number of cachers from around the world to take part in this event. So far there are 26 events organised, mostly in the States but also further afield, such as Canada, The Netherlands and now New Zealand! The local event, Geocoinfest Multi Event - Aotearoa (Canterbury), is being hosted by the four local active cachers in Ashburton, three of which are coin collectors. The location of the gathering is in the Ashburton domain and although is based around coins will be just like any other event since most Kiwi cachers are not as into coins as the Americans. It is sure to be a great event with the locals also promising to place new caches in the area for the event attendees to "Knock Off". Because the event is based around geocoins it seems logical to have a coin specific to this event, so those attending can take away their very own souvenier to remember the event.
